Details from Riverwest Currents Riverwest Currents The Riverwest Currents was published as a neighborhood newsletter for three years. It was started by a community planner and a community organizer for the YMCA. Then in its first year as a monthly newspaper, in 2002 the Currents was supported by a grant from the Milwaukee Fair Housing Council's Housing Opportunities Made Equal program. Our mission has always been to promote fair housing and to encourage the preservation of diversified home ownership in Riverwest. But there is much more. The Riverwest Currents is dedicated to keeping Milwaukeeans informed about issues and events important to those who live, work, and play in and around our neighborhood. We believe Riverwest is a good place to make a home or set up a business. We want to help promote a safe and affordable neighborhood, to embrace urban aesthetics, to respect diversity, and to make Riverwest residents aware of the opportunities available to them. In these endeavors, the Riverwest Currents is a no-frills operation that survives on the generosity of those who support it - whether with their time, money, talents and other forms of support. The organization functions with just a few paid employees. Many of us don't even have "real" "day jobs!" At present, writers, photographers, and illustrators graciously donate their time and skills. To continue to uphold our mission and the quality of our newspaper, we depend upon advertisers, monthly fundraisers, and even donations from those who support our cause.
